Missouri Boat Accident Claims Golden City Man’s Life

April 9, 2013

Missouri Boat Accident that occurred over the weekend was responsible for claiming the life of a Golden City man. Reports indicate the incident occurred Saturday afternoon on the waters of Stockton Lake, just north of Springfield.

According to FOX 4 News, the 20-year-old victim was on the water in a canoe with another individual. When the victim attempted to untie the canoe from a tree though, the boat capsized and both occupants were plunged into the water.

One of the men was able to swim a short distance to shore; however, the 20-year-old man never returned to the water’s surface.

Rescue crews were called to the scene and found the victim a short time later, roughly 20-yards from the lake’s edge. Officials declared him dead at the scene.

Accidents like this often leave the public wondering what can be done to prevent such a tragedy from occurring again.

The St. Louis Personal Injury Attorneys with CofmanTownsley explain one of the most effective methods for keeping those aboard a boat safe on the water is to properly utilize flotation devices. Each person aboard a boat should be equipped with a properly fitting life jacket to wear at all times. Each vessel should also carry extra flotation devices that can be thrown to an individual who falls overboard.

Four Die On Missouri Waterways Over Labor Day Weekend

September 6, 2011

Labor Day weekend for many means a chance to get away to the lake or river for a few days of fun on the water. However, fatality numbers from years past show that the extra traffic on area bodies of water, mixed with an increase in alcohol consumption, can lead to a rise in the number of deaths. This year proved no different on Missouri’s waterways, with a total of four deaths over the holiday weekend.

KSDK 5 News reported two men died after being involved in a three-boat crash on the Osage River Saturday. Four other people were hospitalized in connection with the accident.

On Sunday, a 22-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, man drowned in Smithville Lake. Witnesses said he was attempting to swim across a cove in the lake when he began to struggle. The man went under the water and never surfaced again.

Finally, on Labor Day, the body of a 93-year-old man was found in the Lake of the Ozarks. Investigators stated the man fell off a dock while fishing and drowned.

The Missouri Boat Accident Lawyers with Cofman Townsley say the best way to protect yourself from drowning is to always wear your life jacket when on a boat, participating in water sports, or are anywhere near water if you cannot swim.

Missouri’s Operation Dry Water Nabs 20 Intoxicated Boaters

June 28, 2011

Officers with the Missouri Highway Patrol’s (MHP) Water Patrol Division repor they netted 20 intoxicated boaters on Missouri lakes over the weekend. According to a news release from MHP, two special operations were conducted over the weekend in conjunction with the national “Operation Dry Water” campaign, along with several other checkpoints on Missouri’s water. This is the third year the department has participated in the campaign, which is aimed at raising boater awareness of safe boating and reducing intoxicated vessel operation through education and enforcement efforts.

Vessel sobriety checkpoints were set up on two Missouri lakes on Saturday for two hours in the afternoon, from 4 to 6 PM. On the Lake of the Ozarks, at the fourth mile of the Grand Glaize arm, officers made seven arrests and issued 16 warnings for other safety violations after checking103 boats. At Table Rock Lake, near the Highway 13 Bridge, three arrests were made for intoxicated boaters, while 27 warnings and two citations were issued for safety violations. Over the two-hour period, 71 vessels were stopped at the checkpoint.

The department will continue to crack down over the next several months on operators who choose to indulge in alcohol.

The Missouri boat accident lawyers with Cofman Townsley are encouraging anyone choosing to include alcohol in a day on the boat to designate a sober skipper to operate the vessel. This is the best way to ensure that the outing remains fun and safe.
