Three Workers Injured In Missouri Firework Plant Explosion

March 6, 2012

Three workers at a Missouri fireworks manufacturing facility were injured in an explosion Tuesday. According to reports from KSDK 5 News, the explosion occurred around 7:00 a.m. at the Global Pyrotechnic Solutions plant on Sunset Drive in Dittmer.

A spokesman for the Jefferson County Sherriff’s Office, Captain Ralph Brown, stated that employees reported hearing and seeing a flash explosion in one of the buildings where the three men were working. Two men, ages 22 and 23-years-old, were injured in the explosion and taken to St. Clare Hospital in Fenton, where they were treated and released. A 33-year-old worker suffered serious burns as a result of the explosion and was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in St. Louis.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms will lead the investigation into the incident with assistance from the state fire marshal.

This is not the company’s first accident that resulted in employee injuries or deaths. The company experienced three accidents over an 18-month period 13 years ago that led to two employee deaths and six others being injured. The owners of the company at the time pled guilty to crimes associated with the accident in 2004 and received a 13-month prison sentence and were fined $6,000.

The Missouri Workers’ Compensation Lawyers with Cofman Townsley Injury Lawyers believe employers have a responsibility to keep workers safe on the job and work to help those who have been victimized by employer negligence.

Missouri Baby Dies From Rare Infection Found In Milk Formula

December 20, 2011

According to KY 3 News, the infection has been linked with a bacterium that has been found in some commercial milk formulas in the past, which led to the death of an infant.

The baby boy was born earlier this month and everything seemed normal until he became ill when he was a week old. The couple rushed the infant to the Hospital in Springfield, Missouri, where he died of complications two days later. It was determined that the child died from an infection of a bacterium known as cronobacter sakazakii. The infection is known to cause meningitis, and in extreme cases, death.

An Administrator of the Laclede County Health Department, Charla Baker, told the parents that the infection has been linked to formula powders in the past. They have since sent two samples of the formula along with the water used to prepare it to be tested.

In the meantime, the Food and Drug Administration, along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, are working on the case to determine the source of the bacteria.

Missouri Hospital Begins Study On New Sleep Apnea Treatment

November 15, 2011

A Chesterfield, Missouri, hospital has announced its intentions to conduct clinical trials on a new medical device used to treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). KSDK News reported that St. Luke’s Sleep Medicine and Research Center announced yesterday that it has begun enrolling participants for the trials.

The study will look at the safety and effectiveness of the Apnex Hypoglossal Stimulation System, an implanted device that activates the muscles in the upper airway by electrical impulse to ensure that the airway stays open during sleep. Researchers hope that the new treatment will be beneficial for patients who have trouble sleeping while using common treatment methods like Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), which requires the patient to wear a mask strapped around their head, like a fighter pilot, that will continually pump oxygen into the airway.

Those who are interested in learning if they qualify for the Apnex Clinical Study may call 888-975-3370 or visit the website. Qualified participants will receive the medical device and care free of charge.

While this treatment may be a dream come true for some patients, caution should be heeded. Trial research like this is conducted in order to pinpoint problems and isn’t guaranteed to be safe.

This is why the Missouri Defective Medical Device Attorneys with Cofman Townsley would urge anyone considering participation in a medical device study to consult an attorney to learn your rights as a patient before giving your consent to take part.

Two days before Easter, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a defective product recall including nearly 13,000 Camouflage Eggs and Spinning Egg Top Toys that are sold at Hobby Lobby, according to The News Tribune.
