Missouri Woman Charged In Connection With Fatal Accident

April 24, 2012

University City Police have concluded their investigation into an accident that killed a 19-year-old man in February and have charged the driver responsible for his death. According to KSDK 5 News, the 30-year-old woman from Kirkwood, Missouri, faces counts of first-degree involuntary manslaughter and driving while intoxicated.

The accident happened around 11:15 p.m. along Delmar Boulevard on February 3. The young man had just gotten off work and was riding his bicycle home when a vehicle struck him from behind while he was waiting for a light to change. Rescue crews rushed the young man to Barnes-Jewish Hospital, but he died the following day from his injuries.

Police conducted several field sobriety tests with the driver responsible for the accident, which she failed. A Breathalyzer test indicated that her blood alcohol level was 0.262 percent, more than three times the legal limit.

The drunk driver was charged Friday and was free that afternoon, pending her next court date, after posting a $25,000 bail.

According to statistics from the non-profit organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving, 258 lives in Missouri were lost last year because of drunk driving. That’s more than one-third of the state’s total traffic fatalities.

The St. Louis Drunk Driving Lawyers with Cofman Townsley Injury Lawyers ask that we all do our part to reduce these numbers by not getting behind the wheel after drinking. Establish a designated driver for your party before drinking instead.

St. Louis Man Charged With DUI In Connection To Fatal Car Crash

March 13, 2012

A 32-year-old St. Louis, Missouri, man was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter after being involved in a fatal accident with another vehicle Sunday. According to reports from KSDK 5 News, the accident happened around 1:00 a.m. at the intersection of South Lindbergh Boulevard and East Concord Road.

Officers with the St. Louis Police Department say the man was driving on South Lindbergh when he ran a red light and collided with a vehicle driven by a 58-year-old woman. The woman was taken by ambulance to St. Anthony’s Medical Center where she later died.

Police were able to determine that the driver who ran the red light was under the influence of alcohol at the time after he failed field sobriety tests. The man was arrested at the scene and taken to St. Louis County Jail. He was released Monday morning after posting $50,000 bond.

According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), a national non-profit organization aimed at eliminating drunk driving, 10,839 people will die in drunk driving crashes this year—or one every 50 minutes. At this rate, one in three Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some point in their life.

The Missouri DUI Accident Attorneys with Cofman Townsley Injury Lawyers would like to remind citizens just how dangerous drinking and driving is. Do your part to eliminate the problem by always utilizing a designated driver when drinking.

Speed, Intoxication, and Distractions To Blame In Missouri Wrongful Death Case

January 24, 2012

A combination of distracted and intoxicated driving is to blame for the death of a 38-year-old mother and wife who was hit and killed in September of 2010. According to stltoday.com, the accident happened at around 5:00 PM on Gravois Avenue in St. Louis, Missouri.

Toxicology reports from samples taken after the accident show that the 28-year-old driver of the 2004 Mazda Tribute responsible for the accident had Freon, oxycodone, and marijuana in his system when he plowed through a gas station and hit the woman. Witnesses said the man was also on his cell phone at the time of the accident.

Police executed a search warrant in November 2010 to obtain the man’s phone records to determine if he was using the phone at the time of the crash. While no comment was made on the subject by police, they did charge the man this past Saturday with first-degree involuntary manslaughter.

The woman’s husband also filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver this past April, seeking damages of more than $25,000 for the family’s loss, claiming the driver’s speed, intoxication, and carelessness in using a phone while driving is responsible for the woman’s death. The driver responsible for the accident settled out of court with two individuals in 2000 after a similar accident.

Four Injured In Missouri Crash Being Blamed On Speed And Alcohol

January 10, 2012

Four young adults from St. Clair, Missouri, are lucky to walk away from a single-vehicle accident they were involved in early this morning that is being blamed on alcohol and excessive speed. According to KSDK 5 News, the crash happened as the vehicle was cresting a hill along Peacock Road in Franklin county.

Troopers believe the 19-year-old driver of the 2002 Volkswagen may have been attempting to perform a hill-jumping stunt in the vehicle when he drove the car at breakneck speeds over a steep hill along the rural road. Troopers with the Missouri state highway patrol say that the automobile went soaring through the air and collided with a tree. That impact made the vehicle roll several times before it came to rest in a ditch.

Speed is directly related to fatality rates in car crashes. The faster you are driving, the greater the impact. The greater the impact, the less chances of survival you have. Excessive speed was proven to be a contributing factor to one-third of all fatal crashes in the United States by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

This is why the Missouri auto accident attorneys with Cofman Townsley Injury Lawyers ask that motorists be mindful in obeying all posted speed limits when driving. If you have been injured in an auto accident at no fault of your own, contact an experienced attorney today.

Accidents Across Missouri Leave A Teen Dead And Others Injured

December 27, 2011

A 13-year-old girl died as a result of a car crash early Tuesday morning in St. Louis, Missouri. According to KSDK 5 News, the accident occurred at approximately 12:30 AM along the northbound lanes of Interstate-55.

Police are saying that weather conditions on area roads may have played a part in the crash that killed the teen from Maryland Heights, Missouri. They believe that the 28-year-old male driver of the vehicle she was riding in lost control of the vehicle on the wet, slick asphalt just before hitting a bridge support beam. The driver, along with several other passengers ranging in age from 11 to 30-years-old, were all taken to area hospitals to be treated for serious injuries.

Similar conditions were attributed to another set of accidents in the state along I-70. Police stated the accident occurred when a refrigerated box truck traveling westbound on the highway crashed through a median and collided with two vehicles after crossing the eastbound lanes. Two individuals were taken to a local hospital to be treated for what was described as “minor injuries.”

Missouri’s Operation Dry Water Nabs 20 Intoxicated Boaters

June 28, 2011

Officers with the Missouri Highway Patrol’s (MHP) Water Patrol Division repor they netted 20 intoxicated boaters on Missouri lakes over the weekend. According to a news release from MHP, two special operations were conducted over the weekend in conjunction with the national “Operation Dry Water” campaign, along with several other checkpoints on Missouri’s water. This is the third year the department has participated in the campaign, which is aimed at raising boater awareness of safe boating and reducing intoxicated vessel operation through education and enforcement efforts.

Vessel sobriety checkpoints were set up on two Missouri lakes on Saturday for two hours in the afternoon, from 4 to 6 PM. On the Lake of the Ozarks, at the fourth mile of the Grand Glaize arm, officers made seven arrests and issued 16 warnings for other safety violations after checking103 boats. At Table Rock Lake, near the Highway 13 Bridge, three arrests were made for intoxicated boaters, while 27 warnings and two citations were issued for safety violations. Over the two-hour period, 71 vessels were stopped at the checkpoint.

The department will continue to crack down over the next several months on operators who choose to indulge in alcohol.

The Missouri boat accident lawyers with Cofman Townsley are encouraging anyone choosing to include alcohol in a day on the boat to designate a sober skipper to operate the vessel. This is the best way to ensure that the outing remains fun and safe.

St. Louis Police Officer Arrested For Drunk Driving

June 14, 2011

We trust police officers to keep us safe in our homes and on our roadways. What happens though, when an officer breaks that trust and puts the public in danger? That was the case last week when a patrolman pulled over an off duty officer and arrested him for suspicion of drunk driving.

Stltoday.com reports that shortly after 4AM Wednesday morning, a patrolman conducting speed enforcement clocked the off-duty officer going 57 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone, in a tan, four-door 2005 Pontiac G6. Records show that the officer refused field sobriety and breath tests. The officer was issued citations for speeding and drunk driving following being booked at the jailhouse, and was subsequently released. Authorities say the officer left his post with the St. Louis County Police Department following the incident; however, formal charges have not been filed.

Many times, drunk drivers get behind the wheel because they feel untouchable. A national survey on drunk driving trends found that the average drunk driver had driven under the influence 87 times before being caught. Luck will eventually run out when a drunk driver is arrested or has an accident that could possibly kill someone.

The St. Louis Drunk Driving Accident Attorneys with Cofman Townsley believe drunk driving is not an accident, but a crime. If a drunk driver has injured you, or someone you know, Cofman Townsley offers free consultations of your case. Just fill out a quick online form.
