St. Louis Area ER Units Get New Online Check-In System

We all know how miserable sitting in the emergency room waiting area can be if you are injured. New technology may alleviate that problem at St. Louis, Missouri, area hospitals soon enough.

KMOV 4 News reported yesterday that five emergency departments across the city now offer an online check-in service called InQuicker. Patients can now go to the website and select the emergency center they would like to visit. The patient is prompted to fill out and submit their paperwork online, at which point their place in line is held at the hospital. The system then gives the patient an estimated time at which to arrive at the hospital where they can be seen almost immediately.

The service is new to the St. Louis-area, but has been used in other cities across the nation for years. It is expected to greatly increase patient satisfaction at participating units.

The new system was created by SSM Health Care and will only work with facilities in their network. Participating emergency departments include:

  • SSM St. Mary’s Health Center
  • SSM St. Clare Health Center
  • SSM DePaul Health Center
  • SSM St. Joseph Health Center
  • SSM St. Joseph Hospital West

Missouri Hospital Begins Study On New Sleep Apnea Treatment

A Chesterfield, Missouri, hospital has announced its intentions to conduct clinical trials on a new medical device used to treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). KSDK News reported that St. Luke’s Sleep Medicine and Research Center announced yesterday that it has begun enrolling participants for the trials.

The study will look at the safety and effectiveness of the Apnex Hypoglossal Stimulation System, an implanted device that activates the muscles in the upper airway by electrical impulse to ensure that the airway stays open during sleep. Researchers hope that the new treatment will be beneficial for patients who have trouble sleeping while using common treatment methods like Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), which requires the patient to wear a mask strapped around their head, like a fighter pilot, that will continually pump oxygen into the airway.

FDA Approves Lap-Band Procedure For Less Needy Patients

According to KSDK 5 News, the Food and Drug Administration made the approval earlier this year for patients with lower BMI’s to have the procedure done, meaning people needing to lose as little as 50 pounds can have the procedure done.

The procedure is done by inserting what looks like a zip-tie around the top of the stomach, through a small incision in the midsection. A balloon inside the band limits how much food is allowed to pass into the stomach of the patient.

The procedure has numerous reported problems from something as simple as vomiting and diarrhea, to band slippage and even death. In fact, 88 percent of all patients having the surgery performed reported some kind of complication.

Inmates Health Neglected While In State Custody

Serious questions are being raised about the healthcare that inmates receive in the St. Louis jail system. The inquiry comes after multiple reports by stltoday.com shed light on the inadequacies and negligence of the system and workers currently in place.

The most recent case in question is that of a man who died Friday after falling ill while in custody. The man was booked for drug possession and placed into a detox and rehabilitation wing. He said he was not feeling well that afternoon during his recreational time and went back to his cell to lie down. Guards checked on him at 7PM, at which point he was fine. Thirty-four minutes later, guards found him unresponsive. The man missed his court appearance that morning because deputies claim he was “vomiting too much.”

Man involved in several Missouri medical malpractice lawsuits aiding in federal executions

Court records show a surgeon who has been the target of more than 20 medical malpractice lawsuits is aiding in federal executions, according to the Springfield News-Leader. The Missouri surgeon involved in the medical malpractice lawsuits participated in dozens of state executions until being barred by a federal judge.

The man was barred because of concerns over his dyslexia and lack of expertise. The surgeon was reprimanded for not disclosing his many Missouri medical malpractice suits.
