Power Morcellator Cancer Lawsuits Consolidated Into Multidistrict Litigation

The power morcellator is a device that many medical experts once thought would revolutionize the way certain procedures are performed. However, research has shown the device can cause dormant cancerous cells to be released into the body, where they can then metastasize.

Many patients were not warned of the power morcellator cancer risk, and those who were diagnosed filed lawsuits claiming the companies didn’t do enough to protect the health and safety of patients. Now, those cases are being consolidated in multidistrict litigation.

The battle began in April 2014 when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a safety warning urging doctors and medical professionals to refrain from using the power morcellator to remove uterine fibroids and other tissue from the body due to the risk of releasing cancerous cells. The warning was issued after research showed 1-in-350 women could be at risk of developing cancer after a procedure using the power morcellator.

A total of 20 cases from six different districts will be heard in the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas. The number of cases could increase as more women develop morcellator-related cancers over time.
