The Three Major Causes of Missouri Car Accidents

Many factors come into play when determining common causes of Missouri auto accidents. But the St. Louis car accident attorneys at Cofman Townsley Injury Lawyers explain that new data shows three main causes of auto crashes.
The Missouri Traffic Safety Compendium shows that, in 2013, more than half of all Missouri traffic collisions could be blamed on:

  • Driver Error– More than 22 percent of all crashes in 2013 were the result of mistakes made by the operator of the vehicle. This included driving too fast for conditions, failing to yield the right of way, following other vehicles too closely, and improper lane changing.
  • Distracted Driving– Motorist inattention is an increasingly common cause of auto accidents in our state. Statistics show distraction was responsible for roughly six percent of all Missouri traffic accidents.
  • Driver Impairment– Motorists under the influence of drugs or alcohol accounted for 4,559 accidents in 2013.

While safe driving habits can help prevent accidents, you can’t always predict when a crash will happen. That’s why it’s important for you to know what to do after an auto accident occurs.
