November 19, 2013
The risk of a boat accident is a serious concern anyone working or traveling along a waterway should have, especially in Missouri. The U.S. Coast Guard reports that over the five-year span from 2007 to 2011, the state recorded a total of 65 accidents that resulted in 12 fatalities and 69 injuries.
The St. Louis Boat Accident Lawyers with Cofman Townsley Injury Lawyers explain that more recently, a 51-year-old man was killed as the result of a watercraft collision that occurred on the Missouri River, in the city of St. Louis. Reports indicate the incident happened on Wednesday, October 23, at approximately 9:30 a.m. at the Lewis Bridge spanning along U.S. Highway 67.
According to a story from The Rolla Daily News, the victim was working as part of a crew hired to repair a trestle pier. As he was attempting to cross the river in a johnboat while wearing a lifejacket though, the vessel was struck and plowed over by a large barge in the river.
Rescue crews were able to eventually pull the victim to safety and begin resuscitation; however, he died a short time later.
